The main function of the kidney is to remove waste from the blood. People with damaged or failed kidneys may have difficulty eliminating waste and unwanted water from the blood. Dialysis is an artificial way of carrying out the function of the kidney. Uncontrolled Diabetes and High Blood pressure are the most common causes of Kidney Failure.

To diagnose the kidney failure one has to undergo the blood test measuring BUN, creatinine, and glomerular filtration rate (GFR).

There are different types of dialysis, the three main types are:

  • Intermittent hemodialysis (IHD)
  • Peritoneal dialysis (PD)
  • Continuous renal replacement therapies (CRRT)

In intermittent hemodialysis blood is filtered outside the patient’s body using special filters. The blood comes out of the patient through a tube known as a catheter. The tube is inserted into the vein through a surgery to enlarge the blood vessel, usually in the arm. Haemodialysis is usually done three times a week, for 3 to 4 hours a day.

In peritoneal dialysis, a solution rich in minerals and glucose is run through a tube into the peritoneal cavity; the abdominal body cavity that surrounds the intestine. It uses the filtering ability of the peritoneum, the internal lining of the abdomen, to filter waste products from the blood. The dialysate is allowed to stay in the peritoneal cavity for some time so that it can absorb waste products. Then it is removed out through a tube and discarded. This is done many times a day or it can be done through the night. Osmosis is the process used to remove waste in this method.

The main advantage of this method is that it can be done at home and it gives the patient the freedom to travel because it requires a minimum of specialized equipment. However, the patient has to undergo a small surgery to insert the catheter into the abdomen. This is usually kept closed, except during dialysis.

Intermittent dialysis lasts up to 6 hours whereas the continuous renal therapy will take up to 24 hours, this method is slow and it is done in the hospital. The main advantage of this method is it leads to less complication. It uses either filtration or diffusion.

Dialysis is helpful for patients with failed kidneys, but it may not be as efficient as the normal kidneys. Patients who undergo Dialysis should be careful about the amount of total water intake and they have to care about the food intake as well. One can lead a normal life and travel as long as dialysis treatment is possible at the place they go.

The doctor will suggest the type of Dialysis based on the factors such as the patient's situation, availability, and cost.

Many people in India do not have medical Insurance and, we pay for all the medical bills from our pockets. It can be a nightmare to an average earning Indian if he/she has to pay for a chronic disease like the Kidney problem. There are many who undergo the pain of knowing that a treatment is available but they did not have the money to pay for it.

Bookmyscans has tied up with many leading multi-speciality hospitals in Bangalore to make Dialysis affordable to all. These Hospitals are not only good in the field of dialysis but are also affordable. There are no hidden costs with appointments booked through Bookmyscans and this includes the cost of Erythropoietin, lab tests, doctor consultations, and other medicines. The cost of dialysis may vary slightly from one hospital to another.
