One of the major innovations in medicine in the past century is the total knee replacement. This kind of surgery enables every individual to lead a painless active lifestyle who have been suffering from knee arthritis problems for a long time.
Ever since its inception even in history, knee replacement surgery has been quickly followed by advancements like sterile procedures and the ones performed using anesthesia. Most of the advancements included hardware modifications to enable your knee to function properly and as naturally as possible. These were inculcated due to early problems associated with a knee that required urgent treatment. In ancient times, there were a lot of treatments which failed and did not give any exemplary results as such. This forced and gave way to a lot of advancements in the field of medicine. The history of total knee replacement surgery is an instance of such medical progress which through clinical surgeries and analysis has produced life-changing treatments over time.
The surgical methods have been into form ever since the Roman era. Back then, the surgical approaches were practiced and carried out by a renowned physicist named Claudius Galen. He was popularly known to cure injured gladiators and straighten their injured bones. He was also an academician who studied the anatomy of hog and humans and developed the four humor theory. This gave rise to the anatomical era and post this era, a lot of surgical progressions came into being which also produced about the evolution of total knee replacement surgery. Orthopedics was one of the first specializations to gain recognition during this era. In the year 1895, orthopedics surgery was recognized and in the year 1905, the American Association of Orthopaedic Surgeons came into being. Orthopedics deals with the surgery and re-correction of bones and its related diseases such as the osteoarthritis. The major solution to osteoarthritis is total knee replacement surgery.
In the year 1880, Themistocles Gluck created the notion of knee substitution i.e. knee replacement surgery. He was the first individual to suggest a bone fitting ivory implant in the knee. His attempts failed and his bone fitting ivory implants caused heavy infections but his ideation was quite noble. This gained importance and developed with time after 80 years. Our knee is one of the most critical joints and it is quite hard to fiddle with it. For this purpose, a knee replacement hardware was developed in the year 1951 and was used until the 1970s. In 1970 two procedures for a knee replacement were devised and both had a lot of complications attached with it. The first one was devised by Dr. Sumiki Yamamoto. The method was to support as much of the normal joint anatomy as possible by holding the anterior and succeeding cruciate ligaments. The second procedure was the operative strategy which was originated in the year 1973 at the Hospital for Special Surgery in New York.
Knee replacements surgery has experienced several improvements ever since it was first originated and came into being. The latest improvements in the surgical approaches have wrapped up the past imperfections of the artificial knee joints which have progressed to provide the patient with more comprehensive durability, enhanced stability, and progress in motion for the patient. The developments are not only restricted to the artificial joint but it has grown its horizon in cement procedures, use of more reliable instrumentation in the surgery and more prominent consideration to the leg alignment which has ended in elevated long-term outcomes of the operation.
